I had a lot of other things to do (like release Eternal Moment in Make Modern Issue 32!) but I just couldn’t get this quilt out of my head!Īround the same time, the Just Wanna Quilt ladies put out a request for sponsors for a very cool and fun idea – the Inventory Quilt Project. Luckily, because I was so excited to see this quilt become a reality, I furiously wrote the whole first draft in just a few evenings. The other part of it that made me feel like I was going a little crazy (but again, so worth it in the end!) is that I decided to finally pull the trigger on this idea of a complete quilt pattern: everything a quilter would need to know to make this quilt from start-to-finish. When I was writing the pattern, I did wonder if I had gone a bit crazy but it is so worth it in the end! And for the first time in my writing experience, I chose to include Fat Quarter options, which was yet another layer of quilt math. HOWEVER, the fact that there is so much color play going on, with two different gradient options, meant I had almost double the quilt math to work out. The writing of this quilt was easier than Eternal Moment because it is a repeating block design. This quilt is a valuable lesson in the importance of designing and sewing for fun. The name “Cross Play” is a representation of the fun hours and hours I had coming up with this design and forcing Play to spark my creativity again. I was in love! At the last minute, I decided to do a 3 color gradient, since it struck me that a bit of repetition wouldn’t be bad to have after all. The potential for using scraps is endless! And it’s a sure win for those who love to sew the rainbow.

The full 12 color gradient was actually the first I came up with and I loved it.
I ended up playing with a vertical gradient, that starts at the top right and flows down to the bottom left. So I kept pushing myself to find ways to make it even more fun to piece and to look at when it was done. That made a huge difference! But still, it wasn’t enough. So I alternated the Cross colors, one dark and one light. So I changed it all! The dark grey pieces were changed into the background color, all the HSTs were changed into one color, and the center square changed to a bright color that complemented the Cross in the center.īut that wasn’t enough! All the blocks looked the same and knowing I would get bored piecing the same thing over and over again with no other type of visual interest. I was not a fan of the dark grey elements or the fact that it had so many colors going on in one block. I found the five-patch block called Garden of Eden: I started in Electric Quilt 8 to find some blocks that looked fun and had the potential for manipulating colors to come up with a unique spin on a block. Start – to – Finish! This Cross Play quilt pattern is the first that showcases this complete package and all my patterns going forward will provide the same leveled-up experience.

That’s why I have committed to making all my patterns have everything you would need to make a quilt – from start to finish.
Whoa, tall order right? I haven’t talked about this at length anywhere but my dream for the future of quilting is to help every new and seasoned quilter to feel comfortable and confident in tackling any pattern, without having to dig around the internet for a million tutorials just to be able to make a quilt. It encapsulates what my dreams are for the future of quilting and quilt patterns. The Cross Play quilt pattern is my 4th released pattern. And this part of the process means that I am done and all I have to do is release it into the world!
